HOW CAN I USE MY FRENCH PROFESSIONALLY... outside academia?

READ What Alumni and Others Are Saying About the PFMP

The PFMP applies advanced proficiency in French language and Francophone culture to one of six professional concentration areas: Business, Education, European Union affairs, International Development, International Education, and Media / Arts / Cultural Production.

PFMP graduates enter careers in which strong knowledge of French, communication, and cross-cultural analysis skills are key assets. All PFMP students take graduate classes in French, complemented by classes in the departments of the concentration area. Graduates work across the spectrum: international companies (Nike France, Trek Bicycles, CNH Capital, GfK Custom Research, Grange), banks (Crédit Agricole, Dexia), government agencies (USAID, Defense Intelligence Agency, U.S. State Department), college study abroad and other interdisciplinary programs (Central College Abroad, Carleton College, Southern Oregon University, University of Missouri, Juniata College, Baruch College), non-governmental organizations (CNFA, United Way, Heartland International), international development firms (Chemonics), high schools (summer institute track teachers), and beyond.

Every PFMP student does an individualized professional internship in the French-speaking world, in a business or organization whose work relates directly to the student's career goals. Significant international work experience and the opportunity to perfect French language skills—a critical combination for changing job markets.

The UW-Madison Master of French Studies is presently one of the only credentials signifying both advanced proficiency in French and applied work experience using it. This combination--along with the aggressive and personalized networking program that characterizes the PFMP approach--is arguably the most effective point of entry to job markets requiring experience working in French.

The University and its French Resources

The University of Wisconsin-Madison, a leading research university, has one of the top French graduate programs in the country. It also houses the Center for Interdisciplinary French Studies, one of handful of France-funded centres d'excellence designed to build links between France and the Francophone World and American university publics. It also houses the French Centre de Ressources, a national resource center for French teachers and students doing research on France, as well as the Center for European Studies and African Studies... among several other area studies programs housed in the Division of International Studies under Dean of International Studies (and PFMP co-director) Gilles Bousquet. These programs do not grant degrees but provide countless opportunities for concentration-area coursework and advising in the PFMP.
